Neck pain, stiffness, headaches and dizziness after a collision usually start in the injured neck — not in the car. Gentle neurofunctional therapy in Midnapore, Calgary.
Book on Fresha Call 403-614-3526In a collision — even a low-speed one — the head is thrown forward and snapped back in a fraction of a second, far faster than the neck muscles can react and protect it. That flexion-extension force strains and micro-tears the muscles, ligaments and fascia of the neck and injures the small joints of the upper cervical spine. It is a biomechanical injury: the structures that hold the head up, turn it, and report its position to the brain are the ones that take the damage.
That is why whiplash rarely stays "just a sore neck." The upper cervical spine feeds balance and position information directly to the vestibular system and the brain stem, so a whiplash injury often brings headaches, dizziness, jaw pain and brain fog along with the neck pain — sometimes days after the accident, when the car is already fixed. The nervous system, sensitized by the injury, begins to guard and overreact, and stiffness sets in around the damaged tissues.
The mechanics: the ligaments, discs and muscles injured as the head whips back and forth.
The neurological side: the cord, nerve roots and sympathetic chain under the same forces.
The deep ligaments of the craniocervical junction — alar, transverse and tectorial — that hold the skull, atlas and axis together, and that whiplash can injure.
Treatment at this clinic addresses that mechanism. Neuromuscular Specific Treatment (NST) and Neurofunctional Integration Therapy work gently on the upper cervical spine and the soft tissues around it — no forceful manipulation — while neurosensorimotor reflex integration (MNRI®) helps the nervous system rebuild the stabilization patterns the injury disrupted. Laser and shockwave therapy are added where the injured tissues call for them. Piotr Gorecki has practiced manual and massage therapy since 1993.
Important: a fresh accident injury needs a medical assessment first — fractures and other serious injuries have to be ruled out before anything else. This therapy complements medical care; it treats the neck and nervous-system side of the recovery, and it is often the missing piece when symptoms linger after the medical side has cleared you.
In a collision the head is thrown forward and back faster than the neck muscles can react. That flexion-extension force strains and tears the soft tissues of the neck and injures the small joints of the upper cervical spine — the same structures that feed balance and position information to the brain. Gentle neuromuscular treatment of the neck, combined with neurofunctional and reflex-integration work, addresses that injured side of the problem. Manual therapy complements medical care after an accident; it does not replace a medical assessment.
A fresh accident injury should be assessed medically first — that rules out fractures and other injuries that need medical care before anything else. Once you have been assessed, gentle treatment of the neck can usually begin early; waiting until pain becomes chronic makes the nervous system harder to settle. If you are unsure whether your injury has been assessed enough, call the clinic at 403-614-3526 and we will talk it through.
